Did you know.....Cass Hargis (2008-2011) is the only player in program history to hit for the cycle. The Lions All-Time Hit King hit for the cycle in a 4-3 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at The Pat during the 2009 season. Hargis went 4-4 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.

Recently SLU coach Jay Artigues ran into Bruce from the show "Swamp People" in Hammond. Maybe if coach lets Bruce throw out the first pitch at The Pat one game, Bruce will let coach ride in his boat and wrestle an aligator one episode.

2012 Lions to be Introduced, Alumni Game Set

The 2012 edition of SLU Lions baseball will be introduced to the public on Friday February 3rd at the annual spring banquet to be held at Twelve Oaks on the Southeastern campus. Doors open at 6pm. Individual tickets for the banquet are $25 and will allow fans an opportunity to meet and dine with the team.

Head coach Jay Artigues will present the first ever Lion For Life award at the banquet this year. The award will be given to the Lion baseball alumnus the coaching staff feels best represents the program through community involvement.

Wrapping up the weekend on Saturday February 4th will be the annual Lion Alumni Game, featuring former Lion greats playing the 2012 Lions. Admission to the game is free, as first pitch is set for 1pm at The Pat. Free hot dogs will also be available. "We'll have batting practice on the field for those that don't feel up to playing in the game, but want to come out, reminisce, and take some ground balls or BP," Artigues said.

The Numbers Do Not Lie...SLU One of the Top Programs

The perception is if you are not from a BCS conference school you can not compete with the big boys. But the reality is a mid-major program like Southeastern is not only competing with the big boys, but passing them up.

To a man those BCS conference coaches will tell you that the mid-major programs such as Southeastern can flat out play. Just ask John Cohen of Mississippi State whose team was swept at home by the Lions during the 2010 season. Weekend starters vs weekend starters, the Bulldogs were beaten in every phase of the game. Ask Rick Jones of Tulane, Turtle Thomas of Florida International, Terry Rooney of Central Florida, and Mitch Gaspard of Alabama. Hell ask Paul Manieri what mid-week game he dreads playing every year.

Under the direction of Jay Artigues and his staff the Southeastern baseball program has not only become one of the best programs in the Southland Conference and the state of Louisiana, but one of the best in the country.

Here are the results from a study that SLU Recruiting Coordinator Matt Riser put together and wanted to share with the Lion Nation. THE NUMBERS DO NOT LIE....

It’s exciting in Hammond, LA right now as we are just beginning our preseason group work and looking forward to January 27th, which will be our first day of full team practice. The season is a little over three weeks away and the energy and enthusiasm is really starting to pick up as we look forward to another good season.

Southeastern has shown what consistency and hard work does EVERY single day. In recent years a lot of stock has been put into the RPI system by the selection committee in picking the NCAA at large bids. We recently looked into the numbers and found some interesting stats.

The study looked at the average RPI for the last three years. The usual baseball powers such as Texas, South Carolina, ASU, Florida, Oklahoma, LSU, etc. showed they belong in the top as their RPIs are Top 15 every year. So called Mid-Major programs also showed some consistent RPIs which includes Southeastern. Southeastern’s RPI average over the last three years has been 56.333 which ranks among some of the best not only in the state or conference but in the country.

BCS Conference vs Southland
BCS conferences are always well known for their revenue they bring in with their football teams. SEC, Pac-12, Big East, ACC, Big 10, Big 12 are all great conferences but not all teams are great in those conferences. When looking into the numbers of the RPI it was a little eye opening on where Southeastern stands with some of these so called national powers. Southeastern was higher than every Big 10, all but 2 Big East, 5 Pac-12, 5 ACC, 3 Big 12, and 2 SEC schools.

Schools on the Rise
Perfect Game recently put out a poll of the Top 10 rising programs. In this poll Southeastern was 9-5 against the Top 10 in the last two years with a record of 3-4 against conference rival Texas St. This also included a 3 game sweep of Mississippi St, series win against FIU, and a win against Central Florida. In other words there is another school that’s on the rise. Arizona was the only school in that poll to have a substantially higher average of RPI which was 37.

Sun Belt vs Southland
Many believe the Sun Belt conference is better than the Southland but what many don’t know is the stat at the top of the conference. Not one Sun Belt team had a better average than Southeastern or our in conference rival Texas St, whose average is 41.666. FIU was the highest ranked school who had the same RPI as Southeastern at 56.333. In 2011 Southeastern went to FIU and took the series on ESPN.

Southeastern vs In-State/Conference
Southeastern is 2nd only to one school in the state of Louisiana and that’s LSU. We rank higher than C-USA member Tulane, 75.333, and both Sun-Belt members UL-Lafayette and UL-Monroe whose RPI averages are 71 and 157.666 respectively.

The Southland conference has gradually gotten higher with a conference RPI of 8 last year. The only member of the Southland with a better average is Texas St. whose RPI average is at 41.666.

Here at Southeastern we compete for excellence. There is still work to be done but we have come a long way in a short time. We continue to be one of the best programs not only in the state and conference but in the country as well.

Three Lions Recognized by College Sports Madness

College Sports Madness named three Lions to their 2012 Pre-Season All-Southland Conference team. Junior RHP Stefan Lopez was named to the 1st team. Junior IF Brock Hebert and senior IF Jonathan Pace were both named to the 2nd team.

The SLU Lion baseball team arrived back in Hammond on Sunday to begin their quest for a Southland Conference title and the program's first NCAA Regional appearance since 1994. The first day back on campus saw the Lions go through meetings and get back into the swing of things from the fall.

On Monday morning the players went through their conditioning test, the ever popular Lion Fun Run. Assistant coach Matt Riser was extremely excited about the condition the players reported back to campus in. On his Twitter account he said, "1st Day!!! Guys crushed the Lion Fun Run!!! Good sign of things to come. Can't wait for Feb 17th."

SLU opens the season on February 17-19 against Indiana State at The Pat.

Did you know.....Brandon Street (2008-09) holds the Southland Conference tournament records for hits and RBI's in a tournament. During the 2008 SLC tournament Street notched 13 hits and 11 RBI's in the Lion's five games, leading them to an appearance in the semi-finals. Oddly enough he was left off of the All-Tournament team.

Three Lions Earn Degrees

Saturday was a big day off of the diamond for the Lion baseball family, as three members earned degrees at the 2011 Fall commencement excercises.

Joseph Koon, a RHP from Saltillo, MS, earned a bachelor's degree in General Studies. Mitchell Haynes, who played SS for the Lions from 2007-08, earned a bachelor's degree in Business Administration. Earning his master's degree in Health & Kinesiology was Matthew Schexnayder, who was the Lions catcher from 2007-08.

SLU Alumni Baseball Game

The annual Alumni game, which pits the SLU baseball alum against the 2012 Lions, will be held on Saturday February 4 at "The Pat". First pitch is scheduled for 1pm.

For those former players interested in playing in the alumni game contact Cole Catalano at cole.catalano@yahoo.com. If you do not want to participate in the game but would like to take batting practice on the field, BP will start at noon. And don't forget about the annual Pre-Season banquet which will be held on Friday night at Twelve Oaks on the Southeastern campus. Coach Artigues is looking for a great alumni turnout.

Did you know.....SLU utility IF Michael Rutland's father, Ronnie, was a member of the Lions 1975 Division II College World Series team. The 1975 Lions, who finished 3rd nationaly in the final polls, won the NCAA DII South Regional to advance to the World Series.

Houston Baptist to Join the Southland Conference

The Southland Conference and Houston Baptist University announced today that Houston Baptist will become the 11th member of the conference beginning July 1, 2013. The newest member of the SLC will then become eligible for conference championships and NCAA automatic bids in most of the league's sports.

Houston Baptist was founded in 1960 as a independent Christian liberal arts institution located in Houston, TX with an enrollment of 2,700 students. The Huskies, along with Oral Roberts who will join the SLC in 2012, are the first private institutions to join the league since Trinity University and Abilene Christian University departed in 1970.

Houston Baptist and Oral Roberts are replacing departing members Texas State, Texas-Arlington, and Texas San Antonio, who are joing the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) after the 2012 season.

Watkins Honored at Halftime of SLU Football Game

After earning 2011 Louisiana Collegiate Pitcher of the Year, First Team All-Louisiana, ABCA All-South Region, and second team All-Southland Conference honors, SLU's Tyler Watkins was named the 2011 Southeastern Male Athlete of the Year.

Watkins was honored during halftime of the SLU football game on Thursday night. Once again Watkins gave a dominant performance, as he showcased his signature Michael Jackson "kick" to the delight of the Lion Nation!

Summer Baseball Blog Recognizes Hebert

The College Summer Baseball blog named Lions IF Brock Hebert as one of the top 30 position players in the Coastal Plain League for his performance this past summer. Hebert, who played for the Thomasville Hi-Toms, was ranked the 11th best position player on the list. The Bourg, LA native hit .330 and led the league with 34 stolen bases.

The Green team avoided the sweep with a well played 1-0 victory over the Gold team on Saturday afternoon in the seven inning finale of the Fall World Series. The Gold team won the Fall World Series with their 3-2 and 6-1 victories in Games 1 and 2. The stat of the series comes at the hands of the SLU pitchers, as they surrendered only seven earned runs in 52 innings.

Artigues Announces Fall World Series Schedule

With the conclusion of fall practice Lions skipper Jay Artigues has announced the scheduled start times for the best of three Green-Gold Fall World Series at "The Pat". Games one and two will be played on Wednesday and Thursday with 6:00pm start times. While game three is slated for Saturday with a noon first pitch.

Games one and two are scheduled to go nine innings, with game three set for seven innings. The finale on Saturday will be played regardless of the outcome of the first two games. All games are free and open to the public. PLEASE REMEMBER TIMES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

Game 1 - Wednesday October 19 at 6pm

Lions Get New Look Coaching Staff

When former associate head coach/recruiting coordinator Justin Hill announced he was taking the same position in his home town at UL-Monroe, one would think the Lions might take a hit on the recruiting trail. But enter Matt Riser, who Jay Artigues promoted to recruiting coordinator/top assistant, and the Lions have not missed a beat.

Riser, who is entering his 5th season at SLU as the hitting coach, will continue to work with the outfielders. "He coaches with a lot of energy, just like he played. It's contagious. The guys see that and they feed off of him. He's relentless on the recruiting trail and has done a great job for us so far," said Artigues. Riser's first full recruiting class looks to be a pretty good one coming in for the 2013 season. Each recruit the Lions wanted they have commitments from and will sign early in November.

Artigues also welcomes two new coaches to the Lion family, pitching coach Daniel Latham and volunteer assistant coach Kyle Maxie. With the addition of Latham and Maxie, the Lions now sport the only coaching staff in the Soutland Conference where all three assistants have College World Series experience. Riser and Latham were teammates on Tulane's 2005 World Series team. Maxie played on Southern Mississippi's 2009 World Series team.

Latham was the pitching coach at VMI during the 2011 season, where his pitching staff recorded the 4th lowest ERA in school history and 4th most strikeouts in school history. Prior to VMI Latham was the volunteer assistant at High Point University in North Carolina. During his playing days at Tulane, the Covington, LA native set the school record with 43 saves. Latham was a 15th round selection by the Minnesota Twins in the 2007 MLB draft.

After spending two seasons at Alabama Southern Community College, Maxie joins the SLU staff as the volunteer assistant. At Alabama Southern Maxie worked with both the catchers and outfielders in addition to being the hitting coach. Maxie split time between catcher and DH during his two seasons at USM where he hit .266 with 13 home runs and 55 RBI in 99 career games. The Hattiesburg, MS native began his playing career at Florida State before transferring to Pearl River Community College.

The Lions open the 2012 season February 17-19 against Indiana State at "The Pat".

Gougler Named to All-Jayhawk League Team

The summer honors continue to roll in for SLU baseball players, as senior OF Cody Gougler was recently named to the All-Jayhawk League Team. Gougler, who helped lead the Hays Larks to an appearance in the National Baseball Congress World Series, ranked 5th in the Jayhawk League in hitting with a .366 average. The Huntsville, TX native finished the summer with 13 doubles, 2 HRs, 32 RBIs, and had a .466 on-base percentage.

The Lion Nation can get their first glimpse of the 2012 edition of Lions baseball, as coach Jay Artigues will put the team through their first intra-squad game of fall workouts. First pitch is set for noon following the annual Parent Social.

All intra-squads are free and open to the public.

Fall Baseball Bash Set for October 15

The annual SLU Lions Fall Baseball Bash is set for Saturday October 15 at Twelve Oaks on the Southeastern campus. Doors open at 7:00pm.

This year's bash will be bigger and better than ever, as there will be live music, dancing, food and drinks. And not to get lost in the party atmosphere will be the $5,000 draw down raffle. When you need a break from the dance floor you can head on over to the silent auction to bid on Lion memorabilia and other great items that will be new to the auction.

So spread the word and bring your friends, as the night promises to be a great one for the Lion Nation!

SLU turned a school record 73 double plays in 55 games, finishing the season with 1.33 double plays per game. The Lions beat out Creighton and Illinois for the lead, as they both finished with 1.26 per game.

Northwoods League Names Koon Pitcher of the Night

SLU senior RHP Joseph Koon was named the Northwoods League Pitcher of the Night for his performance on August 1 in the Thunder Bay Border Cats 1-0 victory over Deluth. Koon racked up 10 strikeouts in his 8 1/3 innings of shutout ball.

Perfect Game recently listed junior IF Brock Hebert as the #39 ranked prospect in the Coastal Plain League this summer. Hebert, who played for the Thomasville Hi-Toms, hit .330 for the summer. He finished the season ranked in the top 5 in the league in runs scored (4th/42), hits, (4th/69), total bases (5th/97), and stolen bases (2nd/34).

Slade Named One of CRL's Best

SLU Lion newcomer Harry Slade was recently named one of the top 15 position players this summer in the Cal Ripken League by the College Baseball Summer Blog. Slade, a junior OF, ranked number 15 on the list as he hit .309 and scored 30 runs for Youse's Orioles. Slade also led the Orioles to the AAABA National Championship in Johnstown, PA where they defeated the New Orleans Boosters in the title game.

Are You Ready for Some....Baseball?

That is right Lion Nation....Baseball season is here. Well sort of. The 2012 edition of Lions Baseball have reported to campus, taken their physicals and are moving at full speed as they prepare for the upcoming fall season.

The players completed the 2nd Annual Lion Fun Run this morning, where the team competes in a one mile run. Those who do not meet the required time are welcomed to the "Bonus Club", where they run extra each morning until they can complete the mile run in the required time. The early morning workouts have also begun. Each morning the team reports to the Naquin Strength & Conditioning Center for weights and conditioning prior to attending class.

Jay Artigues will look to put his 38 man roster through individual workouts over the next week, with the first team practice set for September 11. Once again the Lions will host intra-squad games throughout the fall season, which are free and open to the public. Fall practice will conclude with the annual Green-Gold World Series.

SLU will open the season February 17-19 with a three game series against Indiana State at "The Pat".

Miley to Make Big League Debut

Wade Miley makes his major league debut for the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight against the Atlanta Braves in Atlanta. First pitch is scheduled for 6pm cst. Miley, who was called up Sunday evening will be making his first career start as a major leaguer.

Miley Called Up To The Bigs After Dominating Zephyrs

Former Lion LHP Wade Miley was called up to The Show on Sunday evening to join the Arizona Diamondbacks. Miley, coming off of a complete game win with the AAA Reno Aces, becomes the first Lion to reach the Majors Leagues since Jeff Williams did it with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1996.

The Loranger, LA native threw a complete game 3 hitter against the New Orleans Zephyrs on Saturday night at Zephyr Field in front of a electric crowd there to see him (it was like a Reno Aces home game). And the Lions all time strikeout leader didn't disappoint. Miley surrendered one run on three hits and recorded nine strikeouts. But what his followers enjoyed most was his 3-4 performance at the plate. With the Aces Miley was 4-1 with a 3.64 ERA and recorded 54 strikeouts.

Former Lion Great Visits Zephyr Field This Weekend

Former Lion great and Loranger native Wade Miley is scheduled to pitch Saturday against the New Orleans Zephyrs at Zephyr Field in Metairie, LA. First pitch is scheduled for 6pm. Miley, playing for the Reno Aces (AAA affiliate for the Arizona Diamondbacks), enters the contest with 3-1 record to go along with a 4.17 ERA. In 45.1 innings pitched, the Lions all-time strikeout leader (259) has recorded 47 strikeouts.

Miley, who was drafted by the Diamondbacks in the supplemental first round of the 2008 MLB draft (43rd overall pick), is the highest drafted athlete in SLU school history.

The SLU Athletics Department has named senior pitcher Tyler Watkins the 2010-11 Male Athlete of the Year. After excelling on the field and in the classroom this past year Watkins was chosen by a vote of the SLU Athletics Department.

The Petal, MS native finished the season with a 10-3 record, to go along with a 3.26 ERA. He finished the season ranked in the top 10 in the Southland Conference in victories (1st), innings pitched (6th), and ERA (9th). For his performance he was named Louisiana Collegiate Pitcher of the Year, First Team All-Louisiana, ABCA All-South Region, and second team All-Southland Conference.

Watkins becomes the seventh baseball player in program history, and the third under Jay Artigues, to be named the Male Athlete of the Year. Previous winners are Wade Miley (2007-08), Chris Province (2006-07), Steve Trosclair (2000-01), Macky Waguespack (1998-99), Jeff Williams (1995-96), and Troy Melancon (1991-92).

In his 3rd edition of Summer Roundup, Kendall Rogers has listed LHP Steven Poche as a top five performer in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League. In six appearances Poche has a 3.06 ERA in 32 1/3 innings. The PGCBL All-Star also has struck out 29 and walked eight. In the 2nd edition Rogers listed Lions catcher Jacob Fisher as a top five performer in the Coastal Plain League.

RHP Steven Poche has been named to the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game, which will be played on Monday July 18 in Old Brookville, New York. Poche, representing the Albany Dutchmen, will be a member of the East squad in the inaugural All-Star game for the PGCBL. Poche sports a 2.95 ERA with 19 strikeouts in 21.1 innings pitched.

In his Coastal Plain roundup he shows some love to Lion catcher Jacob Fisher listing him in his "Five Standout Performances" section.

1B Jacob Fisher, Southeastern Louisiana: Fisher had a big night at the plate as Thomasville captured a solid 15-3 win over Martinsville. He went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Overall, he’s hitting .279 with a home run and 13 RBIs. He also is slugging .337 with a .367 OBP.

Senior RHP Tyler Watkins keeps rolling in the post season awards as he was named to the ABCA All-South Central Region Baseball 2nd team. Watkins was previously named the LSWA Louisiana Collegiate Pitcher of the Year. The Petal, MS native was 10-3 on the season with a 3.26 ERA. He finished the year leading the Southland Conference in victories, 6th in innings pitched and 9th in ERA on his way to being named a 2nd team All-SLC selection.

Watkins was one of 12 SLC players named to the 27 man team which consisted of schools from the Sun Belt, Southland, CUSA, and the SWAC.

With the grind of a 56 plus game collegiate season coming to an end you would think college baseball players would be hitting the beach for a little R&R. Well R&R will have to wait for some Lion baseball players as they have found new homes for the summer; homes throughout the country where they flock to refine their skills in the traditional collegiate wood bat summer leagues. These guys wouldn't want it any other way!

Brock Hebert and Jacob Fisher are bringing their game to Thomasville, NC where they are playing for the Thomasville Hi-Toms in the Coastal Plain League. Josh Janway and Jonathan Pace traveled to Quincy, IL to play for the Quincy Gems in the Prospect League. Playing in the Texas Collegiate League are Britt Gautreaux and Matt Pittari, who play for the Alexandria Aces in Alexandria, LA while Jason Greenleaf and SLU signee Ryan Downing play for the Acadiana Canecutters in Lafayette, LA. Brady Domangue and Dylan Hills are playing for the Thibodaux/Houma based Southland Hogs. Two Lions who have made their way to the Big Apple are Steven Poche playing for the Albany Dutchmen in the Perfect Game League and Adam Michel who represents the Riverhead Tomcats in Hamptons Collegiate League. Cody Gougler is playing for the Hays Larks in the Jayhawk league in Kansas for the 3rd straight season. Alex Marse is playing in the Valley League with the Front Royal Cardinals as signee Harry Slade suits up for the Youses Orioles in the Cal Ripken Sr League in Maryland, and pitcher Ryan Milton is representing the local area by throwing for NOLA Baseball.

Senior RHP Tyler Watkins was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Pitcher of the Year on Saturday the association announced. Junior SS Justin Boudreaux, a recent 14th round draft pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers, was named to the LSWA All-Louisiana 2nd team. Sophomore 2B Brock Hebert was named Honorable Mention.

Watkins, who finished the season with a 10-3 record, had a 3.26 ERA and recorded five complete games. The Petal, MS native led the Lions in wins, complete games, and innings pitched (102.0). Boudreaux hit .333 on the season with eight home runs and 48 RBIs. Hebert was 2nd in hitting for the Lions with .340 average to go along with two home runs, 31 RBIs, and a team leading 26 stolen bases.

Cryer Named Academic All-American

Senior 3B Josh Cryer was recently named a 2nd Team Academic All-American on the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Baseball Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Cryer becomes the first baseball player in SLU history and the 13th overall SLU student-athlete to earn Academic All-America honors.

The Leesville, LA native, who graduated Summa Cum Laude in accounting, is a three-time member of the CoSIDA Academic All-District team, was awarded the Southland Conference's F.L. McDonald Postgraduate Scholarship, and is a seven-time member of the Southeastern President's List. Cryer is also a two-time Academic All-Southland Conference selection, the 2009-10 SLC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and is a three-time President of the Southeastern Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

On the diamond Cryer finishes his career ranking 3rd in school history in hits (229), doubles (48), and at-bats (760). He is tied for 4th in RBIs (148) and is the school leader in hit by pitches (76).

Lions Place Seven on All-SLC Team

The SLU Lions placed seven members on the 2011 All-Southland Conference Teams by a vote of league coaches and sports information directors. Leading the way was SS Justin Boudreaux, RHP Tyler Watkins, and RHP Brandon Efferson, who were selected to the 2nd Team.

Named to the 3rd team were 2B Brock Hebert and OF Jeff Harkensee. While 1B Jonathan Pace and Closer Stefan Lopez were named honorable mention. Both Boudreaux and Harkensee are two time All-SLC selections.

Bryson Miles of Stephen F. Austin was named SLC Player of the Year, Carson Smith of Texas State was named SLC Pitcher of the Year, and Texas State head coach Ty Harrington was named SLC Coach of the Year.

Seniors Tyler Watkins and Cass Hargis were named honorable mention Southland Conference Player of Week for their performances his past weekend against Northwestern State. Watkins was named honorable mention Pitcher of the Week as he tossed his 5th complete game of the season in the Lions 5-0 win over the Demons on Thursday night. Watkins ran his record to 10-3, as he scattered eight hits, walked one, and struck out two. Hargis, who notched his 298th hit on Friday night, hit .500 (4-8) in the series. The senior OF went 3-5, with a triple, RBI, two runs scored, and two stolen bases in the Lions 5-0 win. On Friday night he went 1-3, with a run scored and a stolen base.

SLU Splits with Demons, Gets 4 Seed in Tourney

The SLU Lions split their season series finale with Northwestern State winning game one 5-0 and falling to the Demons 13-3 in game two. Due to standing water in the outfield at Brown-Stroud Field game three of the series was cancelled and will not be made up. Not playing the game coupled with Texas A&M Corpus Christi's win over Sam Houston on Saturday left the Islanders a half game ahead of the Lions in the standings, which pushes SLU to the four seed in the Southland Conference tournament.

In the Thursday night win senior RHP pitcher Tyler Watkins pitched his 5th complete game of the season and earned his 10th win. His 10 wins on the season are the first for a Lions pitcher since Jeff Williams did it during the 1996 season. Williams holds the single season wins record with 12. Watkins scattered eight hits, walked one, and struck out two. Offensively the Lions were led by Cass Hargis who went 3-5 with a RBI, had two runs scored and swiped two bags.

On Friday night the Lions could only muster three runs on four hits as the Demons racked up 13 runs on 15 hits to win 13-3 in a game shortened by the mercy rule. The Lions defense also committed three errors as SLU fell to 35-20 on the season and 18-14 in the SLC.

Well hello there Lion Nation! It’s the greatest time of the year to be a college baseball player. School is out and all we have to worry about is baseball. Needless to say everybody’s morale is up and we are all really excited about this free time we are finally getting. The weather here in Hammond, America has been fantastic and that has just added to the excitement of what’s to come. The last few weeks have gone pretty good for us and we are looking forward to the last series of the season before the post-season starts. Pretty much everything we wanted to accomplish at the beginning of the season is still right in front of us and if we continue to play good baseball there is no reason we shouldn’t reach those goals we set for ourselves.

Tomorrow morning we head up to Northwestern State for our final three game series of the regular season. Hopefully we can go up there and take care of business and sweep the Demons, who have plagued us the past couple of years. Last year they swept us to end the season and our hopes of capturing a 40 win regular season. With that being said we are eagerly awaiting this series and have some payback for them. That is about all we are focusing on right now even though the conference tournament is right around the corner.

Well Lion fans, that’s about all that’s been going on around here in Hammond, USA. We are all really eager to play this weekend and get the post-season started. Last Time They Played - Last season in Hammond the Demons swept the series winning 8-5 on Thursday, 8-4 on Friday, and 10-7 on Saturday. The Lions got revenge in a SLC tournament elimination game winning 10-4. During the 2009 season in Natchitoches, LA the Demons took the series by winning game one 12-4 and game three 19-9 in seven innings. The Lions took game two 7-5. During the 2009 SLC tourney the Lions eliminated the Demons winning 9-7.

Coaching Milestone - With the Lions 9-4 win over Stephen F. Austin last Saturday, Coach Jay Artigues recorded his 200th coaching victory in Hammond. Artigues becomes only the 3rd coach in school history to collect 200 wins, joining Pat Kennelly (211) and Greg Marten (348). Earlier this season Artigues picked up his 100th SLC coaching victory.

Bruise Brothers - The Lions currently have 104 Hit by Pitches. The school's single season record is 117 set by the 2010 team.

Inside the Numbers - SLU leads the SLC in On Base Percentage (.394) and ranks 2nd in Runs Scored (347). The Demons rank 11th in On Base Percentage (.345) and 12th in Runs Scored (246). On the mound the Lions rank 3rd in both ERA (3.69) and Opponents Batting Average (.264). Northwestern ranks 9th in both categories (4.89 & .290). When it comes to striking out opponents the Demons pitching staff ranks 3rd in the SLC with 392. On the flip side the Lions hitters are the 2nd hardest to strike out, as they only have 289 strike outs on the season.

Leader Board - Tyler Watkins continues to lead the conference in wins, as he has nine after picking up two victories in the three game series against SFA. Brandon Efferson is 2nd with eight. Sunday, May 15, was the final home game of the Lions 2011 season. On this day the seniors were celebrated at "Senior Day". Each was presented on the field with their family and given a framed jersey bearing their uniform number.
It was an emotional day at The Pat as this roster includes several 3+ year members of the Lions Baseball Program.
Congrats to all the baseball seniors and their families.

On Saturday, May 14th Southeastern LA University held its Spring Commencement at the UC. Well the Lions Baseball team had a game on that day, so the player-graduates were recognized on the field pre-game. Watkins Garners Honorable Mention Honor

Senior RHP Tyler Watkins was named honorable mention Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week for his performance this past week that saw him earn two wins on Saturday. Watkins pitched two innings in relief of the Lions extra inning 5-4 win over SFA, which was completed on Saturday due to the rain. Then in his scheduled start the Petal, MS native pitched 5.2 innings and struck out four in the Lions 9-4 series clinching victory.

After earning the rare feat of winning two games in one day senior RHP Tyler Watkins has been named the Southeastern Male Student Athlete of the Week. Watkins earned two wins in the three game series with Stephen F. Austin over the weekend. In game one, which was suspended Friday night due to rain, the Petal, MS native pitched two innings in relief as the Lions won 5-4. Watkins then was the winning pitcher in the Lions 9-4 series clinching victory as he pitched 5.2 innings with 4 strike outs. Watkins leads the SLC with nine wins.

Senior Josh Cryer has been named a recipient of the F.L. McDonald Postgraduate Scholarship, which is awarded by the Southland Conference. The award is given to graduating male and female letter winners with the highest cumulative GPA during their enrollment at Southland Conference universities. This prestigious award is the SLC's ultimate academic honor for its top graduates. CONGRATS JOSH!!!

Lions Celebrate Mother's Day

It was a Mother's Day celebration at The Pat on Sunday, May 8th.

Mothers in attendance received a free box of popcorn and those Lion player moms in attendance received a special yellow rose from their favorite Lion baseball player, their son of course!

The rose was handed to the moms after the ladies lined up across the diamond and threw out the "first pitch" to their sons.

It was a lovely day at the ballpark. Thanks moms!

Gougler Named SLU Student Athlete of the Week

Junior OF Cody Gougler has been named the Southeastern Male Student Athlete of the Week for his performance this past week. Gougler hit a double and belted a pair of home runs, as he drove in four runs in the Lions 15-4 win over Nicholls State on Sunday. For the week Gougler hit safely in all four games hitting .571 with three multi hit games.

Cryer Earns Capitol One Academic All District Honors

Josh Cryer has been named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-District Baseball Team for the 3rd consecutive tear. Cryer has maintained a 4.0 GPA in accounting and is a 2011 Lowe's SENIOR Class Award nominee. In 2009-10 the Leesville, LA native was named the Southland Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as he is a six time member of the Southeastern President's List.

The Academic All-District team is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), which recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their performance in the classroom and on the field.r is the Lions all time leader in hit-by-pitch with 73 and ranks 3rd in career hits (223), doubles (48), and games started (197). He ranks 4th in RBI (145) and games played (206).

LSWA Names Gougler Hitter of the Week

The Louisiana Sports Writers Association named junior OF Cody Gougler as the Louisiana Hitter of the Week for his performance this past week. The Huntsville, TX native hit .571 on the week with a double, 2 home runs, and 4 RBIs. Gougler's week was highlighted by his 3-4 game in the Lions 15-4 win over Nicholls State on Sunday, where he hit a double and two home runs. He hit safely in all four games and had three multi hit games in the weekend series against Nicholls.

Lions Drop Series to Nicholls State

It was an ugly weekend that ended with an offensive explosion. The SLU Lions got roughed up by the Nichols State Colonels on Friday 7-3 then were 10 run ruled in Thibodaux on Saturday 11-1. The Lions put up 11 hits in both games but could not muster the timely hits as the Colonels racked up a season high 16 hits on Friday then topped it with 17 hits on Saturday. To make matters worst SLU committed five errors in the two games.

But as all good teams do, the Lions composed themselves and came out with an attitude on Sunday. An attitude that saw them beat Nicholls 15-4 in a game shortened by the mercy rule. On the day SLU collected 18 hits, with 10 of them coming in the 4th inning. In the inning the Lions scored 11 runs as seven of the 10 hits went for extra bases (4 doubles and 3 home runs). That 4th inning could be the spark that sends the Lions on a late season run.

SLU now sits as 32-18 overall and 15-12 in the Southland Conference. Currently the Lions are in sole possession of 4th place in the standings. They are one game behind 3rd place Sam Houston and two games behind 2nd place Stephen F Austin who visits "The Pat" this coming weekend.

Williams is 2nd with 285.2 and Richard Simon is the school leader with 294. Efferson currently ranks 7th in career strike outs with 209.

Leader Board - Efferson leads the Southland Conference in wins with eight, as teammate Tyler Watkins ranks 2nd with seven. Stefan Lopez's nine saves leads the SLC.

Walk This Way - The SLU pitching staff has only issued 133 walks which is best in the SLC. In contrast the Nicholls State hitters have only drawn 133 walks, which is last in the SLC.

Practice What you Preach - When it comes to getting hit by a pitch the Lions hitters are up to the challenge, as they lead the SLC with 95 HBPs. On the flip side, when it comes to hitting batters the SLU pitching staff leads the way with a conference low 31 hit batters.

Top to Bottom - The Lions lead the conference in On Base% (.390) and Runs Scored (309). The Colonels rank last in On Base% (.339) and 11th in Runs Scored (225).

Did You Know? - Nicholls State first year head coach Seth Thibodeaux was an assistant on Jay Artigues' staff at SLU from 2006-2007. From 2008-2010 Thibodeaux was an assistant coach for the Colonels before taking over the program this season.

It was Breezy in the Big Easy as Lions Beat UNO

In weather more suited for an early season February game the SLU Lions beat the UNO Privateers 9-1 at Maestri Field in New Orleans Tuesday night. With a steady 30 mph wind blowing in from left field and the temps in the low 50's the Lions were able to come up big in the 7th inning by putting five runs on the board. Jacob Fisher led the way for the Lions going 2-3 with 2 RBI and breaking the ice (yes it was cold out there) with a RBI single up the middle scoring pinch runner Alex Marse for the Lions first run.

Jordan Hymel, Jason Greenleaf, and Dylan Hills combined to surrender one run and only four hits as they struck out eight Privateers. With the win SLU moves to 31-16 on the season and sweeps the four game series with UNO.

Freshman RHP Jason Greenleaf was named Louisiana Pitcher of the Week by the Louisana Sports Writers Assocaition on Monday. Greenleaf earned two saves in helping the Lions to a 4-1 week. On Tuesday Greenleaf pitched 3.1 innings of relief, giving up no runs on no hits and striking out four in a 6-2 win over ULL. He came back on Sunday and pitched three innings of no hit ball and retired all nine batters he faced in the Lions series clinching 4-2 victory over Sam Houston State.

RHP Jason Greenleaf and OF Jeff Harkensee were named honorable mention Southland Conference Players of the Week for their performances during the Lions 4-1 week. Greenleaf earned honorable mention Pitcher of the Week, as he picked up two saves during the week. The Covington, LA native pitched 6.1 innings combined against ULL on Tuesday night and against Sam Houston on Sunday, giving up no runs on no hits and striking out five. Harkensee was named honorable mention Hitter of the Week as he ended the week with a HR, 2 2B, 2 3B, and 6 RBI while hitting .474 in the four games.

Hark highlighted his week by finishing a double short of hitting for the cycle in a 15-5 win over UNO. Over the weekend, the Arlington Heights native hit two doubles and triple in the Lions 10 inning 5-4 win over Sam Houston State.

"LION UP"

The catch phrase around the Lions clubhouse the last few weeks has been "Lion Up" which means lets play Lions Baseball by playing the game fast and putting pressure on opponents.  Well this weekend in Huntsville, TX the Sam Houston Bearkats witnessed first hand as SLU went "Lion Up" and earned a crucial Southland Conference road series victory and in the process picked up coach Jay Artigues 100th Southland Conference victory as the Lions skipper.

SLU and Sam Houston entered the series in a three way tie with Texas-Arlington in the SLC standings. By winning Friday in 10 innings 5-4 and then taking the rubber match on Sunday 4-2, behind outstanding pitching from junior Josh Janway and freshman Jason Greenleaf, the Lions left Huntsville in sole possession of third place. With the wins SLU runs it record to 30-16 overall and 14-10 in the SLC.  The 30 wins marks the 5th straight year the Lions have won at least 30 games.
