Inside Lions Baseball would like to congratulate Larry Watkins, father of senior RHP Tyler Watkins, as he was recently named the 2010 National High School Baseball Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Watkins led the Petal High Panthers to a 30-4 record and the Mississippi Class 6A State Championship. The Panthers finished the season ranked #13 in the final Baseball America national poll.
The long time head coach of the Mississippi power was also named the 2010 District 6 Coach of the Year by the National High School Baseball Coaches Association for the second time in his career (1995). District 6 is made up of Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.
In his 30 years as the skipper of Petal High,Watkins has lead the Panthers to 5 State Championships (1990, 1992, 1995, 1999, & 2010) and he reached career win #700 during the 2010 season.
