Martin, Lions steal the Sweep

Top of the 8th scored tied at 5; with two outs and loaded bases, Cody Gougler stands in at the plate for the Lions. With the batters count at 1 ball and 1 strike, Gougler shows bunt and Trey Martin comes flying in from third beating the pitch and sliding safely across the plate to give Southeastern the lead. The Lion fans erupted and the Bulldog fans sat on their hands.

College Baseball Today Shows the Lions Some Love

Bringing the Brooms to MS State!

The Southeastern Lions clinched the series on Saturday after defeating the Mississippi State Bulldogs 8-5 in Starkville. 
Justin Boudreaux, Jeff Harkensee, and Brock Hebert recorded two hits apiece as the Lions dominated the Bulldogs.  With hot bats and a terrific outing by pitcher, Brandon Efferson, Southeastern improves their record to 6-0. 
Efferson threw 6 innings and allowed just 3 runs while earning his second win of the season.
Justin Schneider closed out the game in the 9th earning his first save.
The Lions look for their second consecutive weekend sweep on Sunday, and the fans are ready! (I saw the brooms!!)

Lions Have Big 9th, Beat State

With the scored tied at 1 in the top of the ninth inning and Mississippi State swinging the momentum their way, the Southeastern Lions made a statement. With the bases loaded Jay Artigues sent Joe “Bear” Sparacino to the plate to pitch hit. The “Bear” drilled a single to left field scoring Josh Cryer. Trey Martin then ripped a 1-1 pitch up the middle scoring Phillip Freeman and Chad Gough-Fortenberry to give the Lions a 4-1 lead.

Bats Heat Up, Lions Scorch Mississippi Valley

On a cold night at “The Pat” the Lions warmed things up by bringing out the hot bats in a 15-1 victory over Mississippi Valley State. With the win SLU improves to 4-0 on the season, making it the first 4-0 start since 1998.

Janway Named SLU Student-Athlete of the Week

For his performance over the weekend in the Lions sweep of Eastern Illinois, Josh Janway has been named Southeastern’s Male Athlete of the Week.

Week in Review - Lions SWEEP

Outstanding pitching, productive hitting, and a much improved defense earn the Lions a sweep to open the 2010 season.
In Friday’s opening day game, the Southeastern pitching was pretty tough but the defense was a little shaky and committed 7 errors on the night. However, the offense didn’t waiver and mounted a come from behind rally scoring a total of 5 runs in the 8th and 9th innings to give the Lions a 6-5 win over the Eastern Illinois Panthers.

Inside Lions Baseball has named Jeff Harkensee and Josh Janway as their first ever Players of the Week for Week 1 of the 2010 season.

S-W-E-E-P! Lions defeated EIU 7-2 in Series Finale


What a way to open the 2010 season…with brooms! The Southeastern Lions recorded their first sweep of the year by taking all three games from the Eastern Illinois Panthers. The Lions defeated EIU by a score of 7-2 in Sunday’s match up as starter Brandon Efferson pitched 6 innings and faced only 22 batters while collecting the win on the mound. Josh Janway threw innings 7-9 and earned the save.

For the second consecutive day, the Lion defense showed up to play by committing only one error today and zero in Saturday’s game.

And the Southeastern offense was very productive, scoring 7 runs on 7 hits in the series finale.

Lions Clinch Season Opening Series

Lions win! Lions win! Bring your brooms to Alumni Field on Sunday as the Lions look to sweep the 2010 season opening series.

With an 11-5 victory over the Eastern Illinois Panthers on Saturday, the Lions clinched the first series of the new season and look to take all three on Sunday.

What a thrilling season opener?! The Lions started the home half of the 8th inning down 5-1 and scored 5 runs in the final 2 frames to defeat the Eastern Illinois Panthers 6-5 on opening night.

“Inside Southeastern Baseball with Jay Artigues” is set to begin filming at 11:am on Monday February 15 at Santa Fe Cattle Company in Hammond. Inside Southeastern Baseball is a weekly highlight show featuring SLU head coach Jay Artigues and his Lions baseball team.

Baseball America Picks Lions Fourth, Gough-Fortenberry Top Newcomer

In their 2010 Southland Conference Preview, Baseball America picked the Southeastern Lions to finish fourth in the conference standings and selected freshman catcher Chad Gough-Fortenberry as the Top Newcomer in the SLC.

Diamond Club Meeting Re-Scheduled for Thursday

Due to our World Champion New Orleans Saints victory parade, the Diamond Club meeting that was originally scheduled for Tuesday evening has been re-scheduled. The Diamond Club will now meet on Thursday February 11 at 6:00PM in the Victory Club located in Strawberry Stadium.

Please remember to recruit a friend, as the Diamond Club is the fund raising arm of Lion Baseball.

"The Jungle" - Baseball Tailgating Area at SLU

When the Lion Nation arrives for Southeastern Louisiana baseball games this year, tailgating at Alumni Field will look to reach new heights. And the first order of business to enhance the pre-game party was to give the tailgating area a name. ILB put three names to a vote and the overwhelming choice was “THE JUNGLE”.

This weekend the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team will be hosting three intra-squad games at Alumni Field (Friday 3:00, Saturday 11:00AM, and Sunday 10:00AM). Intra-Squads are open to the public and admission is free. Intra-Squads are subject to change due to the weather.

In a survey of the Southland Conference’s head coaches by College Baseball Insider, Southeastern’s Chris Franklin was voted as the league’s top closer.

Kendall Rogers of Rivals.com has released his 2010 Southland Conference baseball preview today. Rogers has Southeastern picked to finish fourth in the conference race and has placed junior OF Cass Hargis and senior closer Chris Franklin on his All-Conference team.

Lions Picked to Finish Fourth in Southland Conference

The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team was picked to finish fourth in the Southland Conference pre-season polls, the conference announced today. The Lions were picked to finish fourth in both the coach’s poll and the sports information director’s poll.

Cryer, Franklin, Hargis Named to SLC Pre-Season All-Conference Team

Three Southeastern Lions were named to the Southland Conference Pre-Season All-Conference team, the league announced today. C/3B Josh Cryer, RHP Chris Franklin, and OF Cass Hargis were each named to the 2nd team. The teams are voted on by the league’s head coaches.

Lion Baseball is a “Hot Ticket” this Spring

As the Southeastern Lions prepare for the 2010 season opener on February 19th the expectation in Hammond is a championship season. The Lion Nation is eagerly awaiting the start of what many believe could be one of the best seasons in Lion baseball history.
