The SLU Lions dropped a heartbreaking series to Southland Conference leader Sam Houston State over the weekend. With one weekend left to play the Lions, who are 34-18 overall and 18-12 in the SLC, are one game up on Texas State in the league standings. SLU swept Texas State earlier in the season. With the series win Sam Houston clinched the number one seed in the conference tournament.
After winning game one 4-2, by scoring three runs in the sixth inning, the Lions dropped a heart breaker in game two losing 3-2. In game one Stefan Lopez picked up save number 19 on the season, setting the SLC single season saves record. Trailing 1-0 after seven complete in game two, the Lions were able to plate a run in both the 8th and 9th innings. However, the Bearkats answered with a run in the home half of both the 8th and 9th innings winning in walk-off fashion.
In Sunday's rubber match SLU got behind early, as the Bearkats took a 7-0 lead after two innings of play. The Lions stopped the bleeding, holding Sam Houston to one run the rest of the way but could only scratch across three runs in the 8-3 defeat.
