From the Dugout With Tyler Watkins

To get an inside look at what it is like to be a member of the 2011 Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team, ILB has asked senior RHP Tyler Watkins to write a weekly journal giving the Lion Nation a behind the scenes look at one of the top programs in the Southland Conference. To read all of Tyler's weekly journals you can click on his picture on the left menu.

Here is journal #6 for the 2011 season.

Well hello there Lion Nation! The last time I wrote the team morale was a little down and we were having a tough time playing Lion Baseball, but things have turned around for us since then. We have won 8 of our last 10 games including two series’ wins against conference rivals Lamar and UTA and mid-week wins against Southern (2) and South Alabama. We finally feel like we are playing our type of ball again, but we also feel like we still haven’t reached our potential.

We recently returned from our series in Arlington, Texas, and what an experience that was. We got to the hotel on a Thursday and it didn’t take us long to realize we weren’t the only people staying there that weekend. We were sharing the hotel with contestants for the Miss Texas pageant that will take place in September. Needless to say, Coach Artigues had to try extra hard to get some of our guys focused on baseball and not focused on trying to meet their future wives. On Friday before the game we took a tour of The Ballpark in Arlington where the Texas Rangers play. The tour went great and we got to see just about everything in the stadium up close and personal. We even got a little sneak peek into the “off-limits” Rangers locker room before our 4’5’’ 80 year old woman tour guide freaked out a little and made the man who opened the door for us close it. Saturday after we won we were invited to a ranch just outside of Arlington by our catcher Jacob Fisher’s Cousin Jason Roberts. This wasn’t just any ranch; this place was nice, nice enough for the Texas Rangers to have their World Series party there. We were fed steaks, chicken, and some good desserts. The food wasn’t the only good thing about the ranch; we got to sit on a HUGE Texas Longhorn bull, and even got to have a few shootouts with each other using some old revolvers with blanks in them. The time at the ranch was really nice and it was great to just hang out and relax a little bit with everyone on the team. Sunday didn’t go as planned for us as UTA snuck a win in on the weekend.

With all that being said, it was a pretty good weekend. We got to experience some things together that we may never be able to do again and we won a series on the road against a good conference opponent. The most impressive part of the weekend was how our players were able to focus on baseball with all the Miss Texas ladies throwing themselves all over us the whole weekend. This was especially tough for 2nd baseman Brock Hebert because he “accidently” let a couple of the girls see his abs on the way to breakfast one morning.

Anyway, it was good weekend for the Lions and we are looking forward to having a great weekend coming up as we travel to San Marcos, Texas to face conference leading Texas State in a three game series. We hope some of the Lion faithful make the trip to watch us because it promises to be a weekend full of some great baseball.

Until Next Time MANEiacs,

GO GREEN

GO GOLD

GO LIONS
