Just like in their first meeting in Baton Rouge, lightning struck again during the SLU vs Southern baseball game. However, this time the strikes came in the 5th inning from the Marucci bats the Lions were swinging, as they put up five runs on four hits to take a 9-4 lead and never look back in their 10-4 midweek win over the Jaguars.
In the 5th inning Jonathan Pace had a two run bases loaded double followed by a Josh Cryer two run single. The inning was capped off by a Cody Gougler sacrifice fly scoring the 5th run of the inning. Matt Pittari went to the bump in the 6th and gave up no runs on two hits and earned his first career save, while striking out five Jaguars. Jason Greenleaf picked up the win giving up one run on three hits.
Cryer led the way at the plate for the Lions as he went 3-4 with a HR and 4 RBIs. Cryer's HR in the 4th moved him into a tie for 3rd place on the school's all time hit list with Macky Waguespack. His two run single in the 5th put him in sole possession of 3rd place on the all time hits list with 211 career hits.
With the win SLU moves to 23-11 on the season and travels to San Marcos, TX this weekend to face SLC leader Texas State. At 9-6 in the SLC the Lions sit two games back of the Bobcats in the standings.
