Inside Lions baseball has named Tyler Watkins, Brock Hebert and Cody Gougler as the Players of the Week for week one of the 2011 season.
Pitcher of the Week - Senior RHP Tyler Watkins
Watkins pitched a complete game on Sunday night earning the win over Florida International. In his impressive 2011 debut, the Petal, MS native gave up seven hits, struck out nine, and did not issue a walk. Watkins earned the praise of ESPN announcer Kyle Peterson for his dominant performance against the Panthers.
Co-Hitter of the Week - Sophomore 2B Brock Hebert
Hebert hit .455 for series against Florida International with a 2B, 2 RBI, 2 runs scored, and a stolen base. On Friday night, the Bourg, LA native was 3-4 with a RBI, stolen base, and a run scored. Hebert came back on Sunday with another multi hit game as he went 2-4 with a 2B and BB.
Co-Hitter of the Week - Junior OF Cody Gougler
On the weekend Gougler hit .417 going 5-12. The Huntsville, TX native finished with a 2B, 2 RBI, 2 BB and a run scored. Gougler hit safely in all three games going 2-4 with a 2B, 2 RBI, and a BB on Friday, 2-4 on Saturday, and 1-4 with a walk on Sunday.
And let us not forget the web gem of the weekend, when junior 3B Jonathan Pace snagged a rocket hit down the third base line by Garrett Wittels, putting a halt to his 56 game hitting streak.
