Mariners Select Hebert in 14th Round

Brock Hebert , the 2012 Southland Conference Player of the Year, was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 14th round of the 2012 Major League Draft on Tuesday evening.  The South Terrebonne High product lead the SLC in hitting (.374), runs scored (58), and ranked 5th nationally in steals with 36.  Hebert was the 3rd pick of the 14th round and the 431st overall selection.

Seattle's selection of Hebert marks the 9th consecutive season a Southeastern player has been selected in the MLB Draft.

Lopez & Hebert Named All-Americans

Collegiate Baseball News named juniors Stefan Lopez and Brock Hebert to the 2012 Louisville Slugger All-American teams on Thursday. 

Lopez was named 2nd team All-American after leading the nation in saves with 20 and becoming both the program and Southland Conference All-Time career saves leader with 30.  The New Iberia, LA native finished the season with a 0.61 ERA and 42 strikeouts over 29.1 innings, earning the SLC Relief Pitcher of the Year.

Lions Take Series From Cowboys, Lock Up #2 Seed

After losing the opening game of their series with McNeese State 8-6 the Lions bounced back nicely winning the final two games 12-2 and 9-5 to win the series.  With the series win SLU locked up the number two seed in this week's Southland Conference tournament on the campus of Texas State in San Marcos, TX.  The Lions finished the regular season 36-19 overall and 20-13 in the SLC.  The 36 wins marks the 6th straight year the Lions have won 32 or more games and the 4th straight year they have won 35 or more games.

Lucas Receives Academic Excellence Award

Senior catcher Torin Lucas was named the Male Academic Excellence Award Winner at Southeastern Louisiana University's sixth annual Spring Athletic Academic Banquet on Monday.  Lucas, a Sports Management major, was named to the President's List with a 4.0 GPA during the Fall 2011 semester.

Southeastern Sports Report

The Lions open the 2012 season this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday against Indiana State at The Pat.  First pitch for each game is set for 1pm.

The perception is if you are not from a BCS conference school you can not compete with the big boys.  But the reality is a mid-major program like Southeastern is not only competing with the big boys, but passing them up.

SLU Names Watkins Athlete of the Year

The SLU Athletics Department has named senior pitcher Tyler Watkins the 2010-11 Male Athlete of the Year.  After excelling on the field and in the classroom this past year Watkins was chosen by a vote of the SLU Athletics Department.

The Petal, MS native finished the season with a 10-3 record, to go along with a 3.26 ERA.  He finished the season ranked in the top 10 in the Southland Conference in victories (1st), innings pitched (6th), and ERA (9th).  For his performance he was named Louisiana Collegiate Pitcher of the Year, First Team All-Louisiana, ABCA All-South Region, and second team All-Southland Conference.

Cryer Named Academic All-American

Senior 3B Josh Cryer was recently named a 2nd Team Academic All-American on the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Baseball Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).  Cryer becomes the first baseball player in SLU history and the 13th overall SLU student-athlete to earn Academic All-America honors.

Gougler Named SLU Student Athlete of the Week

Junior OF Cody Gougler has been named the Southeastern Male Student Athlete of the Week for his performance this past week.  Gougler hit a double and belted a pair of home runs, as he drove in four runs in the Lions 15-4 win over Nicholls State on Sunday.  For the week Gougler hit safely in all four games hitting .571 with three multi hit games.

Cryer Earns Capitol One Academic All District Honors

Josh Cryer
Josh Cryer has been named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-District Baseball Team for the 3rd consecutive tear.  Cryer has maintained a 4.0 GPA in accounting and is a 2011 Lowe's SENIOR Class Award nominee.  In 2009-10 the Leesville, LA native was named the Southland Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as he is a six time member of the Southeastern President's List.

Lions Take Series From Islanders, History Made

The SLU Lions won a much needed conference series against the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders and in the process some history was made at "The Pat".  On Thursday night the Lions picked up an 11-2 victory behind a dominant pitching performance from Brandon Efferson and a hot bat by Joe Sparacino.

Lions Get Series Win Over Lamar

The SLU Lions picked up a huge series win over Lamar this weekend in Hammond.  After dropping game one on Friday night 3-1 the Lions roared back on Saturday and Sunday winning their second SLC series of the season.

Lions to Face Tough Slate in 2011...Look to become Road Warriors

The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team released its 2011 schedule on Thursday. A schedule that will be one of the toughest in program history. Coach Jay Artigues and his Lions, coming off the first 40 win season in school history, will face 13 of 21 teams that won 30 or more games last season. And if that isn't tough enough 31 games will be played away from the friendly confines of "The Pat".

The Boys are Back in Town

Lion Nation, believe it or not Southeastern Louisiana Baseball has already kicked off its preparation for the 2011 season.  Fresh off of their first 40 win season in school history, Coach Jay Artigues and his staff welcomed back the players to campus yesterday.  The baseball players were due into the locker room Tuesday afternoon for their first team meeting of the year.  Following the meeting they attended a SLU student-athlete social.

SLU to Host "Guy's Casino Night" August 14

The Southeastern Louisiana Athletic Department will be hosting the first ever "Guy's Casino Night" on Saturday August 14 at Twelve Oaks on the SLU campus.  The event, which will raise money to benefit all Southeastern Athletics, is being sponsored by the Lion Athletic Association (LAA).  The LAA is the main fund raising arm of Southeastern Athletics.

Lions Take Series From Texas State

Freshman LHP Jordan Hymel pitched seven solid innings, Chris Franklin earned his seventh save, and the Lion hitters got some key 2 out hits as SLU won their 5th Southland Conference series with a 9-6 victory over 1st place Texas State. With the win the 23rd ranked Lions move to 29-9 on the season and 12-6 in the SLC. SLU now sits 1 game out of the top spot in the standings.
