Outstanding pitching, productive hitting, and a much improved defense earn the Lions a sweep to open the 2010 season.
In Friday’s opening day game, the Southeastern pitching was pretty tough but the defense was a little shaky and committed 7 errors on the night. However, the offense didn’t waiver and mounted a come from behind rally scoring a total of 5 runs in the 8th and 9th innings to give the Lions a 6-5 win over the Eastern Illinois Panthers.
Outfielder Jeff Harkensee belted his first career homerun as a Lion.
Shortstop Justin Boudreaux added a hot bat going 3-4 with a double.
Freshman pinch hitter Chad Livingston recorded his first collegiate hit with a clutch RBI single in the eighth.
Pitcher Tyler Watkins made his Lion debut tossing 6.2 innings with 5 strikeouts.
In game two, the Lion defense was flawless playing 9 innings of errorless ball in the 11-5 victory over EIU.
Freshman pitcher Stefan Lopez notched his first collegiate start on the hill.
Freshman pitcher Jordan Hymel made his collegiate debut as a reliever.
Freshman infielder Brock Hebert recorded his first collegiate hit with a 2 RBI single to center.
Outfielder Cass Hargis was seeing double going 3-4 with 3 two-baggers.
Freshman infielder Alex Marse recorded his first collegiate RBI and run scored.
In Sunday’s series finale, the Lions earned the opening weekend sweep by defeating the Panthers 7-2.
Freshman catcher Chad Gough-Fortenberry notched his first collegiate hit with a single in inning number two.
