Lions Clinch Season Opening Series

Lions win! Lions win! Bring your brooms to Alumni Field on Sunday as the Lions look to sweep the 2010 season opening series.

With an 11-5 victory over the Eastern Illinois Panthers on Saturday, the Lions clinched the first series of the new season and look to take all three on Sunday.

The Panther offense welcomed Lions freshman pitcher, Stefan Lopez, to the collegiate ranks by belting out 5 hits and 4 runs in the opening frame. But the Southeastern offense rallied behind him by chipping away early and adding one run in the home half of the inning.

After allowing two more Panther hits in the second, Lopez was lifted in favor of another Lion freshman, Jordan Hymel. Hymel was credited with halting the Panthers offensive attack as they were held scoreless until the 7th inning with Lion reliever Chris Franklin on the bump, who entered in the sixth.

Franklin took control and allowed only one run on 4 hits in the 7th and forced the Panthers to put up goose eggs in the remaining two frames.

The Lions bats continued to swing as they pushed across runs in the 3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th, and 8th innings.

So, as senior pitcher Cole Catalano requested at the pre-season banquet, when the opportunity presents itself, bring your brooms and your energy and let’s make Alumni Field a true home field advantage!

See you Sunday at the 1 pm start time.

Oh! And if you play the Louisiana Lottery, you may want to consider 5-5-5-5. Why? You ask. Well, the Lions held the EIU Panthers to 5 runs in each of the first two games; today’s game ended with EIU recording 13 hits to the Lions 8….what’s 13-8? And in yesterday’s opener, Southeastern was held scoreless for 5 innings before crossing the plate.

Just a little food for thought!
