Top of the 8th scored tied at 5; with two outs and loaded bases, Cody Gougler stands in at the plate for the Lions. With the batters count at 1 ball and 1 strike, Gougler shows bunt and Trey Martin comes flying in from third beating the pitch and sliding safely across the plate to give Southeastern the lead. The Lion fans erupted and the Bulldog fans sat on their hands.
Josh Janway returns to the hill after entering in the 4th, in the bottom of the 8th and dominates the Bulldog hitters, facing only 4 batters and striking out three.
Mississippi State held the Lions scoreless in the top half of the 9th with Chad Gough-Fortenberry notching the only hit of the inning, his third of the day.
Taking the field for the home half of the inning and the Lions up 6-5, they have the opportunity for their first ever sweep of a SEC opponent. But, the Bulldogs wouldn’t go away quietly as the leadoff hitter singled up the middle. Janway gave way to closer Chris Franklin who was faced with the task of keeping that runner from scoring. And he did just that! Facing four batters with the leadoff guy eventually advancing to third, Franklin induced a 1-3 groundout to end the game and give the Lions the victory.
Southeastern completed the game with 5 hitters smashing multiple hits and errorless defense.
Janway recorded his second win on the season and Franklin his 14th career save, tying Chris Province for the schools leader.
And, freshman Alex Marse recorded his first collegiate hit of his young career.
