Lions Have Big 9th, Beat State

With the scored tied at 1 in the top of the ninth inning and Mississippi State swinging the momentum their way, the Southeastern Lions made a statement. With the bases loaded Jay Artigues sent Joe “Bear” Sparacino to the plate to pitch hit. The “Bear” drilled a single to left field scoring Josh Cryer. Trey Martin then ripped a 1-1 pitch up the middle scoring Phillip Freeman and Chad Gough-Fortenberry to give the Lions a 4-1 lead.

As the Lions fans started to “Get Crunked”, Chris Franklin silenced the Mississippi State cowbells by striking out Ryan Duffy and Wes Thigpen swinging. After giving up a single, Franklin got Ryan Collins to fly out to centerfielder Cass Hargis to end the game. Giving the Lions an impressive win over the tradition rich, SEC contender Bulldogs.

On the mound Tyler Watkins was outstanding, keeping the Bulldogs off balance all night. Watkins surrendered 5 hits in 7.1 innings pitched, striking out 4. At the plate Gough-Fortnenberry led the way for the Lions, going 2-3 with a walk and a run scored. Gougler was 1-3 with a walk and solo homerun in the 2nd inning.

The Lions go for the series win Saturday at 1:00. Sunday’s game is scheduled for 1:30.
