SLU Opens Series with Win Over Sam Houston

Two out hits will carry a team a long way during the course of the season. Friday night at “The Pat” two out hitting lifted the Lions over Sam Houston State 9-5 in the first game of their Southland Conference weekend series. With the win the Lions move to 34-14 overall and 16-9 in the SLC

Josh Cryer came up huge for SLU with two outs as he belted a two out three run double in the first inning to put the Lions up 3-0. Cryer came back in the 3rd inning and recorded his second two out run scoring hit as he drove home Cody Gougler with a single to center. Joe Sparacino followed with a RBI single of his own to give the Lions a 5-1 lead. Chris Ernest and Cass Hargis both went yard for the Lions as Trey Martin went 2-3, with a 2B, BB, 2 RBI, and 2 SB.

On the mound Brandon Efferson ran his record to 8-3 as he earned the victory. Efferson surrendered 4 runs on 8 hits and struck out 6 Bearkats in 6.1 innings of work. With his 8th win this season Efferson now has 16 wins in his career and needs one more to move into a tie for 10th all-time in school history with CJ Payne (1958-63).

And how about Johnny Poumaroux throwing out the first pitch...I think he intimated the Bearkat hitters with that fastball!

The series resumes tomorrow with a 2:00 pm start time.
