How sweet it is to wake up on Monday mornings with a weekend series win in hand. SLU, fighting through some shaky moments all weekend, claimed their 3rd straight Southland Conference series win over the weekend. After dropping game one at Northwestern State 5-1 Friday night the Lions bounced back and won both Saturday and Sunday by 4-2 scores. The series win was also the Lions 2nd straight SLC road series win. SLU sits at 30-15 overall and 15-9 in the SLC.
The Lions took a one game lead for 2nd place in the standings over Texas-Arlington, who dropped their series to Stephen F. Austin. #24 Sam Houston State maintained their four game lead in the top spot by taking two of three from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
With the two wins over the Demons Jay Artigues passed the legendary Pat Kenelly as the second winningest coach in program history with 231 wins. Artigues' 231 wins also ranks 9th best all-time in the Southland Conference. The Lions skipper needs 10 more wins to catch UL-Monroe's Smoke Laval for 8th place. The 30 wins this season also marks the 6th straight season the Lions have won at least 30 games.
Junior 2B Brock Hebert surpassed the school's stolen base record with his three stolen bases in the series, giving him 33 swipes this season. The previous record was held by Troy Melancon who stole 31 bases during the 1992 season. And as we catch up on the milestones, junior closer Stefan Lopez recorded his 15th and 16th saves of the season. Lopez, the SLU All-Time and single season saves leader, now has 26 career saves. The SLC career record is 27 held by Zach Calhoon (2007-09) of UTSA. The SLC single season record is 18 held by Luke Prihoda (2007) of Sam Houston.
SLU will hit the road one more time on Tuesday night, as they travel to Mobile, AL to face South Alabama. The Lions finally return to The Pat this weekend as they take on SLC foe Stephen F. Austin Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
