Wearing their all gold uniforms, it didn't take the SLU Lions long to let #21 Mississippi State know they were coming out looking for the series sweep. Harry Slade set the tone as he hit the first pitch he saw into left center for a double. Slade's hit led to two runs for Lions in the home half of the first and they never looked back, beating the Bulldogs 5-1 to sweep the two game mid-week series.
With the win SLU moves to 13-5 overall and extends their five game winning streak over the Bulldogs, who were one game from a College World Series appearance last season.
Mississippi State recorded 12 hits but stranded 13 base runners, as the SLU pitching staff struck out 10 Bulldogs. Kaleb Manuel picked up his first career win as he pitched 4.1 scoreless innings in relief of Buck Bernard, while striking out four batters. Dylan Hills, who recorded three strike outs, picked up the save.
Brock Hebert, who extended his hitting streak to 12 games, and Sam Roberson each had two hits for the Lions. Jonathan Pace also extended his hitting streak to 10 games. The Lions offense was able to produce five runs on eight hits, as they only left three men on base. The highlight of the night was Hebert's steal of home. With the bases loaded in the third inning and one out, Cody Gougler hit a sacrifice fly to center scoring one and allowing the other runners to move up. While the Bulldogs appealed Hebert leaving early at second base, Hebert alertly broke from third to steal home giving the Lions a 4-1 lead.
SLU will travel to Corpus Christi for a Southland Conference match up with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
