The SLU Lions cruised to a 12-3 victory over Alcorn State at The Pat on Wednesday night, giving head coach Jay Artigues his 220th career win as the Lions Skipper. Buck Bernard picked up his 2nd win of the season as he fanned seven batters over six innings, giving up one run on five hits. The Lions bats only picked up seven hits, however they picked up seven runs on three extra base hits and two sac flies.

What started out as a good game got ugly quick, as Tulane scored six runs in the top of the 5th inning propelling them to a 7-2 mid-week win over the Lions at The Pat on Tuesday night. It was Tulane's first win in Hammond since the 2002 season. With the loss SLU falls to 18-7 on the season. The Lions return to action on Wednesday night against Alcorn State at The Pat. First pitch is set for 6pm.
In this weeks Perfect Game Top 50 poll the Lions join the rankings at number 36. SLU is sitting at 18-6 overall and 6-3 in the SLC after sweeping SLC foe UT-Arlington.
Junior 2B Brock Hebert was named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week for his performance this weekend in the Lions three game sweep of UT-Arlington. For the week Hebert was 7-10 (.700) with a double, HR, 3 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. He also extended his hitting streak to 18 games. Junior LHP Jordan Hymel was named honorable mention Pitcher of the Week.
With a SLC series sweep over a very good Texas-Arlington team the Lions have jumped seven spots to number 14 in the College Baseball Daily's Mid-Major poll.
Another weekend at The Pat. Another series sweep for the Lions. With a lineup fueled by Brock Hebert and Jonathan Pace, an impressive bullpen, and a gem of game pitched by Jordan Hymel, SLU swept the visiting Texas-Arlington Mavericks to move to 18-6 on the season and 6-3 in the Southland Conference. The Lions are now 13-1 this season at the friendly confines of The Pat with three weekend series sweeps.

Did you know.....In the last three games vs Mississippi State the Lions have successfully executed a steal of home twice. In Wednesday night's 5-1 win over the Bulldogs, Brock Hebert stole home as Mississippi State attempted to appeal Hebert leaving second base early on a bases loaded sac fly. During the 2010 season Trey Martin scored the winning run in the Lions 6-5 series sweeping victory in Starkville with a straight steal of home.
Wearing their all gold uniforms, it didn't take the SLU Lions long to let #21 Mississippi State know they were coming out looking for the series sweep. Harry Slade set the tone as he hit the first pitch he saw into left center for a double. Slade's hit led to two runs for Lions in the home half of the first and they never looked back, beating the Bulldogs 5-1 to sweep the two game mid-week series.
Senior catcher Torin Lucas was named the Male Academic Excellence Award Winner at Southeastern Louisiana University's sixth annual Spring Athletic Academic Banquet on Monday. Lucas, a Sports Management major, was named to the President's List with a 4.0 GPA during the Fall 2011 semester.
Freshman RHP Andro Cutura, in only his second start of his career, picked up his first collegiate win in the Lions 4-3 upset of #21 ranked Mississippi State at The Pat on Tuesday night. After giving up an early two run home run Cutura settled in and pitched five strong innings, giving up six hits and fanning three Bulldogs. Jason Greenleaf came on in relief striking out three batters in three innings and Stefan Lopez sealed deal with his sixth save of the season, as the Lions defeated Mississippi State for the 4th straight time. In 2010 SLU swept the weekend series in Starkville, MS.
It wasn't the opening Southland Conference series the Lions were looking for as they dropped two out of three games to in-state rival Nicholls State. However, in this young season we have learned something about the 2012 team. When their backs are against the wall they respond.
Senior catcher Jacob Fisher has been named to the 2012 Johnny Bench Award watch list, which is presented by BaseballSavings.com. Fisher, along with John Hale of Sam Houston State and Andrew Stumph of Texas State, represent the Southland Conference on the watch list.

Did you know.....Jonathan Pace hit the first home run of the 2012 season in the Lions 12-1 victory over Alcorn State last night. Pace also hit the first home run of the 2011 season in a 8-3 loss at Florida International.
The SLU Lions baseball team had a choice to make. They could pack it in and feel sorry for themselves after a tough 3-1 loss to Jackson State on Tuesday night. Or they could "Lion Up" and bounce back with a solid a performance heading into the first weekend of conference play.
In baseball hits are great. But timely hits are the difference between winning and losing. On Tuesday night the lack of timely hits was the main culprit in the Lions 3-1 defeat to Jackson State in Jackson, MS. SLU (9-3) recorded nine hits on the night. However, the Lions stranded 11 base runners, nine of them in scoring position.
With their 9-2 start the Lions are starting to get some mentions in the national polls. After going 2-2 this week SLU received votes in the NCBWA Poll and in the USA Tody/ESPN Top 25 Coaches' poll for the second consecutive week. SLU was also listed as one of five teams to watch in Perfect Game's Top 50 poll.
After going 2-2 during the past week SLU remained ranked at number 24 in the weekly College Baseball Daily Mid-Major poll. The Lions fell to Tulane 12-1 in mid-week action and to Central Michigan 7-6 on Friday. The Lions bounced back with a 9-1 win over McNeese State and got revenge on the Chippewas with a 8-1 victory on Saturday. In the win over Central Michigan SLU set the school record for stolen bases in a game with 10.
After a tough midweek loss to Tulane on Tuesday night the SLU Lions were looking to rebound in a three team round robin in Lake Charles against Central Michigan and McNeese State. In game one of a double header on Friday the weekend got off to a rocky start, as the Lions suffered their 2nd consecutive loss 7-6 to Central Michigan.
