Over the weekend the SLU Lions went on the road and did a little house cleaning as they swept UTSA in the opening weekend of Southland Conference play. The Lions looked impressive in all phases of the game the entire weekend.
On Friday night SLU won 6-0 as Brandon Efferson pitched a complete game shut out. Efferson held the Roadrunners to three hits and struck out nine. He retired the final 13 batters he faced, as he ran his record to 3-0.
In game two on Saturday Justin Boudreaux led the way at the plate going 4-5 with a triple, as the Lions recorded 15 hits on the day. Jonathan Pace, steady as usual, went 3-5 with a double and four RBI's. Jason Greenleaf picked up his first collegiate win while pitching 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. Stefan Lopez earned his 4th save of the season.
In the get away game on Sunday the Lions went for the kill. Taking no prisoners in the Alamo city, SLU pounded out 13 hits, with eight of them going for extra bases, in their 10-4 victory. The can of whoop ass was opened in the 3rd inning when the Lion's sticks made a statement. Jeff Harkensee and Josh Cryer hit back to back home runs. Then back to back doubles by Joe Sparacino and Cody Gougler followed, giving the Lions a 6-0 lead. Tyler Watkins was smooth on the mound, as he limited UTSA to three runs while striking out six.
With the sweep the Lions move to 12-4 overall and 3-0 in the SLC.
