After suffering a tough 6-5 loss on Friday night to the UTA Mavericks, the #22 ranked SLU Lions came out fighting like champions on Saturday and Sunday. With the thought of sliding to the middle of the pack in SLC race, the Lions answered the wake-up call by winning 11-5 on Saturday and shutting out the Mavs 6-0 on Sunday to win the series. Sunday marked the first time this season the Lions had a rubber match game in a weekend series.
On Saturday SLU had 8 of their 9 hitters in the lineup record a hit and 6 of the 8 had multiple hit games. Leading the way was Cody Gougler and Brock Hebert, who each went 4-5. Joe Sparacino and Josh Cryer both went yard for the Lions. Brandon Efferson ran his record to 6-1 on the season as he surrendered 3 runs on 8 hits and struck out 4.
With the series tied at 1 game apiece, SLU once again came out swinging. The Lions collected 10 hits and Jordan Hymel and Chris Franklin combined to pitch a 6 hit shutout to clinch the series with a 6-0 win. Once again SLU rode the hot bat of Brock Hebert, as the freshman second baseman went 2-3 with a HR and 3 RBI. Hebert also extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Justin Boudreaux was 3-4 with a 2B. Cass Hargis’ RBI single in the 8th inning was his 102nd of his career and moved him into a tie for 9th place all-time with Scott Hebert (1988-91), as he passed his former Little League coach Andy Allain (1981-1984).
The Lions now sit at 10-5 and are in sole possession of 2nd place in the SLC standings. They trail Texas State, who visits “The Pat” next weekend, by 2 games. SLU returns to action on Tuesday, as they host Alcorn State at 6:00pm and Wednesday they host the Alabama Crimson Tide at 7:00pm.
