On Deck - #22 Lions vs. University of South Alabama

The #22 ranked SLU Lions begin this week on the road as they head east to Mobile, AL for a re-match with South Alabama. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00pm at Stanky Field.


In their last meeting on March 24 in Hammond, SLU won 6-5 on a walk-off pinch hit single by Chris Ernest. The Lions were out hit by the Jaguars 11-8 and SLU left 14 runners on base. However, USA walked 10 and hit 4 Lion batters and the Lions got key hits when needed to win in dramatic fashion.

The Lions are 5-2 since that last meeting and enter the game fresh off of a 5-1 win over Lamar to salvage the weekend series. USA is coming off of a Sun Belt series sweep of UNO. The Jaguars are 6-1 since the meeting in Hammond and have won 5 straight including a 14-13 victory over Southern Mississippi. USA currently is the leader in the Sun Belt Conference.

South Alabama is hitting a .335 as a team and have stolen 58 of 70 bases. However, their pitching staff is allowing opponents to hit .298 and has a 5.38 ERA. The Jaguars top hitters are Zach Grichor (.402, HR, 21 RBI), Sean Laird (.398, 6 HR, 31 RBI) and Jake Overstreet (.394, 7 HR, 51 RBI).

SLU comes into to the game hitting .294 as a team and are led by Justin Boudreaux (.345, 6 HR, 33 RBI), Jeff Harkensee (.336, 3 HR, 21 RBI), and Cody Gougler (.327, 3HR, 23 RBI). The Lions pitching staff is holding opponents to a .256 BA and sports a 3.24 ERA, which both lead the SLC.
