SLC Race Gaining National Attention

With 6 teams all within 2 games of the conference lead, the Southland Conference race is being closely watched on the national stage. College Baseball Today names the SLC as the “Best Conference Race” in this week’s Friday’s First Take segment. And the SLU/UTA matchup is considered the SLC marquee series this weekend.

Here is the write-up by Eric Sorenson of collegebaseballtoday.com:

BEST CONFERENCE RACE – FOR NOW.
The Southland Conference.
I know it’s early, but going into this weekend the top six teams in this conference are all separated by just two games. Here is how things stand for now:

1- Texas State, 9-3 and 17-10
2- So. Louisiana, 8-4 and 24-6
2- McNeese St., 8-4 and 17-11
4- Northwestern St., 7-4 and 19-9
4- Stephen F. Austin, 7-4 and 19-9
6- UT Arlington, 7-5 and 14-15

Marquee Series This Week:
UT Arlington at No. 22 Southeastern Louisiana
Although SLU has been nails at home (15-2), they’ll be taking on a Maverick team that is gaining confidence, having won back-to-back weekends on the road at UT-San Antonio and Northwestern State, two of the pre-season favorites in the SLC.

The pitching matchup of UTA’s Jason Mitchell (4-2, 1.96, 61-to-9 K-to-BB ratio) going up against SLU’s Tyler Watkins (3-2, 3.27, 27-7 K-to-BB ratio) gives the Mavs a legit shot at a Friday night win. But the Lions have plenty of firepower to take the series, even if Mitchell is on his A-game in the first contest.
