Inside Lions Baseball wishes you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Opening weekend is set for February 18-20 at Florida International in Miami, FL.  Friday and Saturday's games can be seen on ESPN3 and Sunday's game is being televised live on ESPNU.  The Lions home opener is Tuesday February 22 against Tulane at "The Pat".  First pitch is scheduled for 6:00pm.

Congratulations Graduates

Southeastern LA University held its fall commencement on December 11, 2010.  We'd like to congratulate the following former Lion baseball players on their graduation:
Ryan Boudreaux (2009-10), Chris Ernest (2008-10), Phillip Freeman (2007-10), and Andrew Hickman (2007-08).

Kristin Waguespack, office assistant, also received her diploma.  Kristin worked as a student worker for the SLU Athletic Department; serving 4 seasons with the baseball program.

Congratulations to these student-athletes and thank you for your contributions to the Lion baseball program.  We're proud of you!

Series Losers But Good Sports

And the Winner Is...

The Heart of a Lion competition ended this week with a paint ball war.  Senior outfielder Cass Hargis' "Baby Bulls" remained in the lead after outscoring Senior Josh Cryer's "Papa Bulls" in the swimming relay on Tuesday.  The "Baby Bulls" continued to dominate as they downed the "Papa Bulls" at the paint ball event.  Congratulations to the 2010-2011 Heart of a Lion competition winner, the "Baby Bulls"!

No Time for Rest

The Lion baseball players continue to be active in the community.  During the fall the team spends time at local schools helping serve in many different capacities.  They assist in the libraries, classrooms, and cafeterias. 

Always Competing...

Currently the Lion baseball team is competing for the annual "Heart of a Lion" championship.  This is an inter-squad competition where the players are divided into two teams selected by seniors Josh Cryer and Cass Hargis.  Last week's challenges were an obstacle course, push-up/pull-up competition, and a 2 mile cross country run.  This week's events consist of a swim relay and a paint ball war.  Hargis' team is ahead in the standings going into the final two events.  Who will be crowned the coveted "Heart of a Lion" this year?

Green & Gold World Series To Conclude Fall Workouts

The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team will conclude its Fall workouts with its annual Green-Gold World Series starting Thursday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00pm.  Game 2 is set for Friday afternoon with a start time of 2:30pm.  The series will wrap up on Saturday, as Game 3 is scheduled for 11:00am.

Lions to Host Fall Baseball Bash

The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team will be hosting its annual Fall Baseball Bash on Saturday October 16, 2010 at 7:00pm in the Student Union Ballroom on the Southeastern campus. The Fall Baseball Bash is a fun filled night which includes dinner, draw down raffle (you do not need to be present to win), door prizes, auction of Lions baseball memorabilia, and a chance to meet Head Coach Jay Artigues and his staff, along with former Lion baseball players.

Lions to Face Tough Slate in 2011...Look to become Road Warriors

The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team released its 2011 schedule on Thursday. A schedule that will be one of the toughest in program history. Coach Jay Artigues and his Lions, coming off the first 40 win season in school history, will face 13 of 21 teams that won 30 or more games last season. And if that isn't tough enough 31 games will be played away from the friendly confines of "The Pat".

Catching Up With Cole Catalano

Inside Lions Baseball recently sat down with former Lion pitcher and recent Southastern Louisiana graduate Cole Catalano for a lil Q&A chat.  Cole just completed his first head coaching stint this past summer, as he led the Bill Hood Broncos to a 33-7 record and a 6th place finish in the Connie Mack World Series.  Just as he did as a player, Cole coaches with a passion for all of those involved with his team.

College Baseball Power Outage???

In an attempt to make metal bats perform more like wood bats in the collegiate game, the NCAA has implemented a new testing method called BBCOR (Batted Ball Coefficient of Resolution) testing.  BBCOR measures how lively the collision is between the bat and ball.

Lions Kick-Off Fall Practice

Coach Jay Artigues and his Southeastern Lions baseball team kicked off the Fall practice season on Wednesday with their first full squad workout.  Fresh off of their school record 40 win season, the Lions will be preparing for the 2011 season as they will host intra-squad games on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at Alumni Field.  The  parent/social meeting will be held at noon and the intra-squad will follow.

Watkins Named ABCA National High School Coach of the Year

Inside Lions Baseball would like to congratulate Larry Watkins, father of senior RHP Tyler Watkins, as he was recently named the 2010 National High School Baseball Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association.  Watkins led the Petal High Panthers to a 30-4 record and the Mississippi Class 6A State Championship.  The Panthers finished the season ranked #13 in the final Baseball America national poll.

The Boys are Back in Town

Lion Nation, believe it or not Southeastern Louisiana Baseball has already kicked off its preparation for the 2011 season.  Fresh off of their first 40 win season in school history, Coach Jay Artigues and his staff welcomed back the players to campus yesterday.  The baseball players were due into the locker room Tuesday afternoon for their first team meeting of the year.  Following the meeting they attended a SLU student-athlete social.

Hebert Named to All-TCL Team

Brock Hebert, representing the Texas Tomcats, was recently named to the All Texas Collegiate League team for his performance over the summer.   For the summer Hebert hit .299 with 2 2B, HR, and 7 RBI.  The Bourg, LA native led the TCL with 39 stolen bases.

SLU to Host "Guy's Casino Night" August 14

The Southeastern Louisiana Athletic Department will be hosting the first ever "Guy's Casino Night" on Saturday August 14 at Twelve Oaks on the SLU campus.  The event, which will raise money to benefit all Southeastern Athletics, is being sponsored by the Lion Athletic Association (LAA).  The LAA is the main fund raising arm of Southeastern Athletics.

Martin Selected to Play in MMBL All-Star Game

The collegiate summer league All-Star honors continue to pile up for SLU baseball players, as 1B Trey Martin has been selected to play in the Montgomery Metro Baseball League All-Star game.  Martin, representing the Red Sox, will participate in the weekend series which will be held July 16 & 17 at Patterson Field in Montgomery, AL.  Martin is currently hitting .391 for the summer.

Hargis Selected to Participate in Home Run Derby

The Coastal Plain League 2010 All-Star Fan Fest and All-Star Game will be hosted by the Forest City Owls on July 19th and 20th at McNair Field in Forest City, N.C.
The two-day event will feature a Fan Fest on the night before the All-Star Game, highlighted by an All-Star Home Run Derby. The league’s annual All-Star luncheon and All-Star Game will take place the following day. There will be several opportunities for fans to interact with the All-Stars during the event.

Cass Hargis has been chosen to participate in the Home Run Derby.  He is one of 8 hitters selected from the American All-Star Team.  Hargis is a member of the Thomasville Hi Toms.  Good Luck Cass!

Hargis Named to CPL All-Star Game

SLU OF Cass Hargis has been named to Coastal Plain All-Star game the league announced Tuesday.  Hargis, representing the Thomasville Hi-Toms, will be a member of the American CPL team who will battle the National CPL team on July 20th in Forest City, NC.  Hargis is currently hitting .310 with 7 2B, 3B, 3 HR, 17 RBI and is 8-10 in stolen bases.

Cox Has Good Showing in ACBL All Star Game

SLU pitcher Mat Cox had good showing in the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League All Star game on Monday, as he allowed no runs on one hit in one inning of relief.  Cox, pitching for the ACBL East squad, entered the game in the 5th inning.  After giving up a hit, he induced a ground ball double play followed by a lazy fly ball to left field to end the inning.   The East squad fell 4-1 to the ACBL West.

Cox Selected to Play in ACBL All-Star Game

Junior RHP Matt Cox was recently selected to participate in the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League All-Star game, which will be played at St. John's University in New York on Monday July 12.  Cox, playing for the Westhampton Aviators, sports a 1.93 ERA in 23.1 innings pitched.  On the season Cox is 3-0 with 12 strikeouts.

Hebert Plays in Texas Collegiate League All-Star Game

SLU's Brock Hebert was named to the Texas Collegiate League All-Star game that was played on July 5 in Victoria, TX.  Hebert, representing the Texas Tomcats on the South squad, was 1-5 with 2 runs scored and 2 stolen bases.  The game ended in a 7-7 tie.  On the season Hebert is hitting .300 with a 2B, HR, 6 RBI's and a league leading 29 stolen bases.

Miley Gets Promotion, Shines in Debut

The Arizona Diamondbacks recently promoted former SLU Lion great Wade Miley to their Double-A affilate, the Mobile BayBears.  In is debut with the BayBears Miley threw seven innings giving up no runs on five hits and striking out 8.  He only issued one walk.  In his home debut in Mobile on Tuesday, Miley threw seven innings giving up 1 run on 4 hits and striking out 5.

Miley was a first round draft choice of the Diamondbacks in the 2008 MLB draft.

Former Lion Moves a Step Closer to the Majors


Former SLU Lion closer, Chris Province, has been recently called up to the Minnesota Twins triple A affiliate Rochester Red Wings.  Province was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 2007 MLB draft and was traded in the offseason to the Twins.  In his two appearances since being promoted, Province has 2.08 ERA in 4.1 innings pitched to go along with 2 strikeouts.

Artigues to Appear in "Softball for Soldiers" Celebrity Softball Game

Southeastern head coach Jay Artigues, fresh off of the school's first ever 40 win season, will be participating in the "Softball for Soldiers" celebrity softball game in Baton Rouge.  The charity softball game, presented by Bevel Tech Group, will be played on Friday July 16 at Oak Villa Softball Complex in Baton Rouge.  First pitch is scheduled for 6:30pm.

Cryer, Gougler, & Watkins Named to All-Academic Baseball Team

Keeping up with the tradition that coach Jay Artigues has built, where his baseball players take pride in excelling in the classroom, the SLU baseball team has placed three members on the 2010 Capital One Bank/Southland Conference All-Academic Baseball Team. Josh Cryer and Cody Gougler were named to the 1st team and Tyler Watkins was named to the 2nd team.

Artigues Named Louisiana Co-Coach of the Year

After guiding the SLU Lions to its first ever 40 win season, Jay Artigues was named 2010 Louisiana Co-Coach of the Year along with UL-Lafayette's Tony Robichaux by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

LSWA Names Four Lions to the All-Louisiana Team

The Louisiana Sports Writers Association recently named four SLU Lions to its All-Louisiana Team.  Earning a spot on the 2nd team were senior RHP Chris Franklin, sophomore SS Justin Boudreaux and junior DH Joe Sparacino.  Freshmen LHP Jordan Hymel was named Honorable Mention.

Harkensee Named WMBL Hitter of the Night

SLU OF Jeff Harkensee was named the Western Major Baseball League Hitter of the Night by the College Summer Baseball blog for his performance in the Okotoks Dawgs extra inning 5-4 win on June 9th.  Harkensee led the Dawgs at the plate by going 3-5 with a 2B, RBI, and run scored.

Hargis Named CPL Hitter of the Night

SLU OF Cass Hargis was named the Coastal Plains League Hitter of the Night from June 11th by the College Summer Baseball blog.  The Meraux, LA native finished a HR shy of the cycle, as went 3-3 with a single, 2B, 3B, BB, and 2 RBI's in the Thomasville HiToms 6-3 loss to the Forest City Owls.

SLU junior catcher Josh Cryer was named among the 24 student-athletes selected as 2009-10 Capital One Bank Southland Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Year in an announcement from the league office.

Boudreaux Named to ABCA South Central All-Region Team

Justin Boudreaux, who was a quarterfinalist on the Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year Award list, was recently named to the 2010 ABCA South Central All-Region team as a second team member.

Hymel Named Freshmen All-American

Freshmen RHP Jordan Hymel was named to the Louisville Slugger 2010 Freshmen All-American team as chosen by Collegiate Baseball.  The Gramercy, LA native finished the season with a 7-1 record in 17 appearances with 11 starts.  Hymel finished 4th on the team in innings pitched with 64 and was fifth in strikeouts with 41.  Congrats Jordan.

Livingston Named Honorable Mention Hamptons Hitter of the Night

Freshmen utility man Chad Livingston was named honorable mention Hitter of the Night in the Hampton's Division on the ACBL (Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League) by the Summer College Baseball blog for his performance on June 6th.  The Slidell, LA native, playing for the Westhampton Aviators, went 2-4 with a HR, 3 RBI's, 3 runs scored and a BB in the Aviators 13-4 win over Northfork.

Hargis Named Honorable Mention CPL Hitter of the Night

Lions center fielder Cass Hargis was named honorable mention Coastal Plains League Hitter of the Night by the College Summer Baseball blog for his performance on June 7th.  Playing for the Thomasville HiToms, Hargis went 3-4 with a 2B, HR, and 2 stolen bases in the HiToms 7-4 loss to Wilson.

Franklin Selected by Padres in MLB Draft

RHP Chris Franklin was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 12th round of the 2010 MLB Draft.  The Oneonta, AL native was the 364th overall selection earlier this afternoon.  Franklin leaves SLU as the Lions all time saves leader with 19, to go along with a 13-9 record.  In his two year career Franklin recorded 115 strikeouts.  In 2008 his 12 saves set the SLU single season record which propelled him to be named to the NCBWA All-American team.

The SLU Lions placed six student-athletes on the 2010 All-Southland Conference teams the league announced Monday.

Lions Look to Salvage Series

For the second night the Northwestern State Demons picked up timely hits and held the SLU offense in check, as they won a critical Southland Conference series with a 8-4 win over the Lions. With the win the Demons now lead SLU by a half game. With Texas State’s 6-0 loss to Texas-Arlington, the Lions are still sitting one game behind the Bobcats. If the Lions win tomorrow and Texas State falters against Arlington, the Lions and Bobcats would be co-champs and SLU would earn the #1 seed in next week’s conference tournament.

Lions Fall in Series Opener, Look for Revenge Today

In what was one of the loudest crowds this season at “The Pat” the Lions brought the winning run to the plate with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th. However, Northwestern State’s career saves leader, Chad Sheppard, was able to induce a fly out to centerfield and a ground out to second to secure the 8-5 win for the Demons. With the loss SLU dropped to 21-10 and now lead the Demons by a half game. With Texas State’s win over Texas-Arlington the Lions sit one game behind the Bobcats with two to play.

Nothing Lean about this Sweeping Win

With a 14-7 victory over the SFA Lumberjacks, the Lions completed their second consecutive conference series sweep.  After taking all three from Sam Houston last weekend at The Pat, SLU went on the road for a little house cleaning and handed the Jacks their first sweep of the year.

Lions Win Series, Tie School Record for Wins

The SLU Lions tied the school record for wins as they notched their 38th win of the season in a 10-6 victory over Stephen F. Austin on Saturday. More importantly the Lions now lead the Lumberjacks by 1.5 games in the Southland Conference standings and trail Texas State by one game, as they were beaten Nicholls State 7-3. The Lions improve their record to 38-14 overall and 20-9 in the SLC.

Baseball Adds to Graduates

Congratulations to senior RHP, Cole Catalano, who is scheduled to receive his college diploma today.  Instead of walking across the stage with his fellow graduates, Cole's running with our baseball Lions on the diamond in Nacogdoches, TX as they look to take a key conference series from Stephen F Austin today.

And, congratulations are in order for baseball manager Jason Janis, who also becomes a SLU alum.  Jason isn't making the stage walk either, as he's with his team in Texas.

Way to go guys- we're proud of you.  Go Lions!

Cryer, Watkins Trump Jacks

Josh Cryer was 4-4 with 2 RBI and Tyler Watkins pitched a complete game 7 hitter as the SLU Lions beat Stephen F Austin 7-1 in Nacogdoches, TX. With the win the Lions improve to 37-14 and 19-9 in the SLC. The Lions now sit in sole possession of 2nd place in the standings, two games behind Texas State.

Cryer Named CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District

SLU junior catcher Josh Cryer has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VI first team, the CoSIDA office announced recently. This is the second consecutive season the Leesville, LA native has been named to the team.

SLU Comes Out Swinging, Takes Series From Sam Houston

The SLU bats heated up, as every Lion starter collected a hit and Chris Franklin threw his third straight complete game in their 8-6 come from behind win over Sam Houston State. With their 7th Southland Conference series win the Lions improve to 35-14 overall and 17-9 in SLC play.

SLU Opens Series with Win Over Sam Houston

Two out hits will carry a team a long way during the course of the season. Friday night at “The Pat” two out hitting lifted the Lions over Sam Houston State 9-5 in the first game of their Southland Conference weekend series. With the win the Lions move to 34-14 overall and 16-9 in the SLC

Lions Come Up Short Against LSU

The SLU Lions were ready to prove they belonged on the national scene as they entered their game against the struggling LSU Tigers at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge. Although they fell to the Tigers 9-5, the Lions did prove they do belong.

SLU Takes Series From Colonels

After winning game two of their Southland Conference series with Nicholls State on Saturday the SLU Lions were determined to keep the momentum going as they entered the rubber match in Thibodaux on Sunday. The steady rain couldn’t even stop the Lions as they collected 13 hits and the pitching staff tallied 10 strikeouts in their 14-5 victory over the Colonels. With the win the Lions move to 33-13 overall and 15-9 in SLC play.

Sunday's Game Time Changed to Noon

Sunday's rubber match game between SLU and Nicholls State at Ray E. Didier Field in Thibodaux, LA has been moved up to a noon start time due to the treat of rain on Sunday afternoon.

Cryer’s Grand Slam Ignites Lions Over Colonels

After falling to Nicholls State on Friday night the Lions put up 9 runs on 9 hits to win game two of their SLC series 9-4. Ignited by Josh Cryer’s grand slam, SLU scored 7 runs in the 3rd inning. And with Chris Franklin on the mound in his second career start the Lions would even the series and win their 32nd game of the season. Franklin pitched his second complete game in as many starts giving up 4 runs on 5 hits and striking out 8 Colonels.

Lions Fall to Nicholls State 5-3

Looking to stay hot after winning their last two games the SLU Lions couldn’t figure out Nicholls State pitcher Clint Dempster. Dempster pitched a complete game 7 hitter and fanned 16 Lions on Friday night in the Colonels 5-3 victory. With the loss the Lions fall to 31-13 overall and to 13-9 in the Southland Conference. SLU currently sits in 5th place in the SLC standings, a game behind Texas-Arlington.

Saturday's Game Time Changed to Noon

Due to threat of afternoon showers in the Hammond area on Saturday, first pitch of Game 2 of the Southland Conference weekend series between SLU and Nicholls State has been changed to noon.  The game time has been moved up two hours to try and beat the rain.  Friday and Sunday's games in Thibodaux still remain at there scheduled times.

Franklin Named SLC Pitcher of the Week

Senior RHP Chris Franklin was named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week for his performance on Sunday in a 11-3 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Poll Watching...

After finishing the past week with a 1-3 record, the SLU Lions fell out of all the major polls this week.  The Lions did receive votes in the NCBWA and USA Today/ESPN Coaches polls.

SLU Drops Mid-Week Contest to Tulane

The #20 ranked SLU Lions couldn’t get any hits to fall at Turchin Field on Tuesday night as they split the Senators’ Cup series with Tulane losing Tulane 6-0 in New Orleans. SLU dropped to 29-10 on the season.
