Bear Delivers Knockout Shot in a Typical SLU-UTSA Game

Well well well. What did you expect? When SLU and UTSA meet in a Southland Conference show down you know there will be plenty of hits, there will be a knockout blow and 1 run will decide the game.

The #26 ranked Lions (13-1) took an early 3-0 lead highlighted by a Justin Boudreaux 2 run homerun, which extended his hitting streak to 6 games. They then fell behind 9-4 through 6 and half innings, but managed to jump all over the Roadrunners in the home half of the 7th by scoring 6 runs on 2 hits and 2 UTSA errors. In the 7th Chris Franklin delivered a 2 run single and the knockout was delivered when Coach Jay Artigues sent Joe “Bear” Sparacino to the plate to pinch hit. Sparacino ripped a 3 run monster shot to right center to give the Lions a 10-9 lead. Franklin then moved from 3B to the mound where he pitched two scoreless innings, giving up no hits and striking out 3 to earn his 4th save of the season. In the end both teams combined for 22 hits (SLU 10, UTSA 12)

Stefan Lopez picked up his first collegiate win as he entered the game in relief of Tyler Watkins. Lopez pitched 2.2 innings giving up three hits and one run. Leading the way at the plate was Chris Franklin who went 3-4 with 3 RBI and Cody Gougler who went 2-3 with a run scored.

The series resumes on Saturday at “The Pat” with a 2:00 start time.
